Massive arrival of turtles has already begun in Playa Ostional

AGLO

The warm shores from Guanacaste hosts the arrival and spawning of thousands of Kemp’s ridleys.
The splendid natural show began on Friday night and will last three more days in Playa Ostional, Guanacaste, as it was announced by the Association of Local Guides of Ostional (AGLO).

The arrival for the month of September is considered one of the largest of the season. It all occurs at night in the light of the moon and lasts until the sun comes out. The turtles create the nest in the sand and begin their work in silence, interrupted only by the sound of the waves when they reach the shore.

The warm climate in Ostional makes it one of the few places in the world where the arrivals maintain healthy and constant populations. Arrivals can add up to 100 thousand turtles in a few days and have records of up to 300,000 in less than a week.

The arrivals of turtles in Ostional are constant since 1959, but it was 10 years later when the Costa Rican scientific community began to study this phenomenon. If you want to witness it, you must abide by the regulations of the refuge.
