May and beetles come together

With the arrival of the fifth month of the year, some well-known visitors also come: the “May beetle”.

What brings these visitors to our homes?

The transition from summer to the rainy season.

Federico Paniagua, a specialist from the Insect Museum at the University of Costa Rica (UCR), explained that rainfall brings favorable conditions for these insects.

They usually approach the lights in houses when night comes and they feed on roots, so they usually appear in areas where there are trees and vegetation.

Some species of beetles can fly hundreds of meters, from a quiet area to houses or buildings.

According to the expert, beetles do not have bacteria, but some of them feed on animal waste, such as dogs and cows’, and often lay their eggs near the excrement.

The recommendation is to sweep them, or use a cup with water near the artificial light that attracts them. It will be a kind of trap.
