Almost two years after the Nicoya earthquake, the Ministry of Public Education (MEP) continues with the reconstruction of schools. To date 5.92 billion colones ($11.84 million) has been spent, but many students are still displaced and attending school in community halls and makeshift locations.
According to MEP engineer Johanna Marchena, priorities have been allocated according to the numbers of students affected and schools with larger populations have received more prompt attention.
The total number of educational institutions affected by the earthquake were 281, of which 73 were classified as severely damage, in cases where infrastructure posed an imminent danger to safety or structural stability.
To date, 41 contracts have bee signed, 4 of which are in construction, and 37 are in preparation. An additional 36 contracts remain under analysis.
