Not later than September 28th of this year, the Ministry of Public Education (MEP) expects to have settled the debt with the Costa Rican Social Security Fund (CCSS).
The Ministry’s debt amounted to ¢27 billion. The previous Friday, both institutions reached an agreement for payment and an advance of more than ¢ 7 billion was made.
The agreement allowed the MEP to become a full-time employer, although now it will have to pay more than ¢ 20 billion more, according to Luis Diego Calderón, Director of Collections of the CCSS.
Marco Fallas, Deputy Minister of Education, explained that although the deadline is September, the idea is to make the payment sooner.
He added that the money came from the institution’s annual budget and did not require additional resources.
Since Friday when the agreement was signed, the situation of MEP teachers and staff in health services was normalized. A few weeks ago, there were cases of educators who had to carry out a series of different procedures in the Ebais due to the debt.
