Many of the drug-trafficking rings in Costa Rica have their roots in Mexico.
In recent years, police authorities have disarmed several groups of Mexicans linked to drug-trafficking organziations located in Costa Rica.
From June 26th, 2015 to November 9th, 2016, authorities have arrested:
-3 Mexicans from Sinaloa.
-3 Costa Ricans with are related to Mexican and Colombian drug cartels.
-24 people accused of being part of the Sinaloa cartel.
The data is confirmed by the number of Mexicans serving sentences for drug trafficking in Costa Rica. According to the Directorate General for Social Adaptation of the Ministry of Justice, by the end of October, 41 Mexican citizens were serving sentences.
The Public Ministry declared that Costa Rica is seemed as an attractive “warehouse” to store the drug that comes from the South and that will later be smuggled to North America.
