Mexico and Central America reached an agreement to address migration

On Saturday, the governments of Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras agreed to create a plan to address migration within the framework of the inauguration of Andrés Manuel López Obrador as the new Mexican president.

We will work on the creation of a fund, with the fundamental objective of implementing the comprehensive development plan that includes programs, projects and specific actions to create jobs and fight poverty,”

said the new Mexican government in a statement.

The government noted that the link between southern Mexico, El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras stressed the need to address the phenomenon of migration as a complex problem that requires adequate governance.

The document for the creation of the plan was signed by the president of Guatemala, Jimmy Morales, the President of Honduras, Juan Orlando Hernández, and the vice president of El Salvador, Óscar Samuel Ortiz.

El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras are grateful for the initiative of the president of the United Mexican States to manage new resources and contribute with their own experience in this joint effort,”

said the document signed by the leaders.

At the end of November, the new Mexican Foreign Minister, Marcelo Ebrard, said that progress will be made on the plan at the World Migration Conference, to be held in Morocco on December 10th and 11th.

The minister added that it is a project similar to the Marshall Plan – a US initiative to help Europe after the Second World War – in terms of the amount of effort.

The migratory phenomenon has captured the international spotlight since mid-October when thousands of Hondurans began a journey in caravan from their country to escape criminal violence and poverty.

The vast majority is currently in the Mexican border city of Tijuana trying to seek asylum in the United States, despite the fact that President Donald Trump has threatened to close its border and describes migrants as invaders.
