Migrants keep coming to the southern border

According to the press office of Immigration, 201 more migrants and 6 families arrived on Sunday at the southern border of Paso Canoas.

On Saturday, they reported the arrival of a group of more than 400 people, who were placed in shelters from the Red Cross in Buenos Aires and Golfito.

Norman Rivera, neighbor and community leader, said more people are received every morning from Panama. They go to Migration to regulate their immigration status in the country.

The flow of new migrants declines at about 9 a.m. Generally, about 100 people arrive throughout the day and remain in the area of customs until noon,”

said Rivera.

Communications Minister, Mauricio Herrera, said that geographical conditions of the border complicate the complete closure of the passage for these people.

On Friday, President Luis Guillermo Solís warned the State would close its borders to migrants, since there are not good conditions to assist them. However, when people arrive, they are transferred to the aforementioned shelters.

According to reports from international media on Sunday, there are more Cuban migrants getting ready to move from Colombia to Panama. About 8,000 migrants are estimated to have passed through the South American country to try to reach the United States in the last three months.
