The Directorate General of Migration and Foreigners (DGME) is preparing for an eventual increase in the number of Nicaraguans who want to enter the country, due to the political crisis that Nicaragua is currently experiencing.
We would have to assess the possibility of allowing admission, much more when people need safety or leave their country to avoid being in greater danger. In this sense, Costa Rica is very committed to special protection systems,”
said Gisela Yockchen, Director of Migration.
Until Tuesday morning they did not register blunt changes in the figures of entrance to the country by the northern border in Peñas Blancas. However, there was a drop in the number of people leaving towards Nicaragua.
Over the weekend, the companies that provide the bus service between Costa Rica and Nicaragua and other Central American routes canceled their services, waiting for the conditions to improve. Some of them have already been restored.
It’s been eight days of violent protests in Nicaragua. Figures from social organizations claim that there are about 100 people arrested and at least 25 dead. Another hundred people would be hurt.
The demonstrations started against a reform of the quotation system approved by President Daniel Ortega, who days later had to reverse this measure. However, the discontent of the people remains and the protests do not end.
