The shipment of 4,200 kilograms of an agrochemical called bromacil, which is banned by Executive Decree, has caused different sectors of civil society to refer to the issue, including environmentalists, the Phytosanitary Service, the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock and of course the company that made the purchase: Agricenter S.A.
The product entered the country after the Decree was approved, so now it cannot be used in Costa Rica, therefore, the possibility of re-exporting or eliminating the product was being studied.
However, the Costa Rican Conservation Federation (FECON) is against the elimination, since they have alleged that depending on the procedure followed, it could cause damage to the environment and the health of the population.
Although re-export is one of the options considered by the Phytosanitary Service and by the company Agricenter S.A., the Ministry of Finance indicated that there was time until December to do it. Therefore, the question is why wasn’t this done before?
The Minister of Environment and Energy, Edgar Gutiérrez, said that if re-exportation has not been made within the established period, the company must be fined and they must determine if there was complicity of any public official.
