Ministry of Health confirms three imported cases of measles

February 22, 2019 by Staff News Writer

After the analysis by Incensa, it was determined that three people have measles in the country: A five-year-old French tourist boy, his mother and father, who arrived in Costa Rica on February 18th. The country did not have imported cases since 2014, according to the latest count by the Ministry of Health.

The child and the mother were not vaccinated against measles, and the father did not have the complete vaccination scheme.

According to the story of the parents – apparently – the child would have contracted measles at school, since some classmates would have had the disease.

The three patients are currently in strict quarantine since they were admitted to the Hospital Monseñor Sanabria, in Puntarenas, on Wednesday. The Ministry of Health will ensure that the seven-day quarantine is fully complied with, with the objective of protecting public health.

At the same time, the ministry will monitor the French companions to determine if they were infected or not, in order to assess susceptibility and need for vaccination.
