The deputy minister of public works and transportation, Sebastián Urbina, said the lack of staff prevents them from effectively solve road congestions.
To contain public spending, the government has frozen hiring new staff. This prevents filling up vacancies left by retiring traffic officers, according to Urbina.
According to the official, the traffic engineering unit doesn’t have enough staff to count vehicles on highly used intersections. This data is important to design a vial reordering plan.
In the last week, the road from San José to Heredia has collapsed due to long traffic jams. Many critics have noted that the President Luis Guillermo Solis hasn’t keep his campaign promise of fixing the traffic problem.
