After nine days of national strike in protest against the tax reform project, the Ministry of Public Security (MSP) confirmed that 44 people have been arrested.
Of that amount, the majority have been arrested the province of Limón for looting, rioting and carrying homemade bombs, among others.
The report was published this Tuesday by the press office of the Ministry, where they also confirmed that 49 police officers have been treated for different events.
Within those groups of people there are union flags. If the one that throws stones at police officers belongs to a union or not, I leave it to the interpretation of the people. In the case of Limón, I attribute it to common crime,”
said Minister Michael Soto, who added they always try to start with a dialogue, but an agreement to avoid using more drastic measures is not always possible.
Limón, Barranca, and Puntarenas are the main points where the protesters have concentrated in the last week.
The national strike, called by the union groups against the processing of the bill of fiscal reform, has had its peak at the sites where Costa Rican Petroleum Refinery (RECOPE) supplies gas and hydrocarbons. Last week, there were blockades and demonstrations with the aim of affecting the fuel load in tanks that supply the network of service stations throughout the national territory.
