More than 500 homicides have been committed in Costa Rica in 2017

With just two months to get next year, the judicial authorities already handle figures of more than 500 homicides.

In total, the Judicial Investigation Agency (OIJ) registers 504 deaths as a result of disputes over drug trafficking, revenge, femicide and fights.

This was confirmed by Álvaro González, chief of homicides of the judicial police, who explained that to date there have been 17 homicides more than in 2016.

Last year the country saw the highest number of homicides with a total of 578 murders. For 2017, OIJ estimates point to a figure of 600 cases.

This year there has also been an increase in the number of deaths due to retaliation, which account for almost 50% of cases. More than half of those cases are linked to drugs.
