More than 6 thousand people sign petition against lagarteada

More than six thousand people have signed a petition to ban the traditional lagarteada (crocodile sport hunting carried out on Good Friday) that takes place in Ortega, Santa Cruz in Guanacaste.

The initiative was created after authorities confirmed the death of an animal that was part of the 2017 edition. In just two days, more than 6,400 people signed the document that will be delivered to the authorities of the Ministry of Environment and Energy.

We are against any kind of animal abuse. In the video we saw how the animal died. In two days we have gathered more than six thousand people. I plan to deliver their signatures to MINAE and I think the video will change things. I’m surprised by people’s reaction,”

said conservationist Ocampo.

Ocampo added that the ruling of the Constitutional Chamber in 2009 endorses the activity as long as the animal is not harmed, but with the video clearly shows abuse. People can sign the petition HERE.
