More than 70 trees were planted in wildlife refuge

August 16, 2019 by Staff News Writer

Thanks to a group of volunteers and organizations, La Marta wildlife refuge, located in Pejibaye de Jiménez, Cartago, managed to advance the forest recovery, with more than 70 trees, planted during the weekend.

We have undergone major transformations due to climate change, which can be seen in situations such as the reduction of the water flow, of some species in the area such as frogs and in general, of ecosystems due to the climate, the increase in temperature and humidity reduction. For this reason, we greatly appreciate the support of projects such as these, which contribute to mitigate the effects,”

said Manuel Víquez, director of the refuge.

Némesis Barrantes, representative of the Planeta project, led by the Castro Carazo University, commented that the objective is to join efforts and promote student participation, but with a green and sustainable approach.

Today we have students from all university majors, because the idea is to link the entire community in the Ecoforming model and ‘students training students’, with the purpose of raising awareness with projects such as tree planting and recycling,”

said Barrantes.
Different species

As part of the awareness program, the volunteer groups received a talk about the different species options that can be used in reforestation processes , since it is normally believed that the restoration is done with wood, but fruit and leguminous trees are an excellent alternative, which also generates additional benefits.

In total, 76 fruit and leguminous trees were planted to recover the forest of La Marta and eliminate invasive palnts.

The volunteers of the Association of Volunteers for the Service in Protected Areas (ASVO) participated in the event, as well as Eco Grecia and the International Association of Students of Economic and Commercial Sciences (AIESEC) also participated.
