Municipality of Cartago signs agreement to treat solid waste

The Municipality of Cartago signed a regional agreement for the management of solid waste with the local governments of El Guarco and Jiménez and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB).

The objective of the project is to seek the improvement of Solid Waste Management through an analysis of current municipal capacities and tools and the opportunity to commercialize waste.

The idea behind the agreement is improving the living conditions of the inhabitants in terms of pollution, bad smells, flooding, recycling and garbage in general.

It is clear that a correct management of solid waste is an important step for the development and quality of life of the citizens… We have signed this agreement with the firm conviction that it will give the optimal results and will be a very strong link to reinforce our commitment and the projects we carry out for the environment,”

said Rolando Rodríguez, Mayor of Cartago.

This regional initiative also involves municipalities in Honduras and Guatemala; and in Costa Rica is led by the National Union of Local Governments (UNGL), which participated and won the contest for a $650,000,000 non-refundable project from the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), endorsed by the General Comptroller of the Republic.

To materialize this initiative, a visit was made with representatives of the IDB to the three participating municipalities, in order to officially sign the agreement and to assess the current waste management.
