National Route 1856, known as border shortcut didn’t have tangible progress in its restoration this year.
Luis Guillermo Solís’ government promised to end the work that the administration of Laura Chinchilla Miranda (2010-2014) didn’t finish.
However, to date, the state of the project makes it easy to predict that it will be impossible and the authorities already admitted, in advance, that there are not enough resources to complete it.
According to the National Highway Council (CONAVI), the plan amounts to 16.4 billion colones, but to date only more than 2 billion colones (17%) have been invested.
The 155-kilometer road was part of an emergency decree issued by Chinchilla government due to the border dispute with Nicaragua. However, since it faced doubts about possible corruption, works have been paralyzed since 2013.
