National strike affected several hospitals

May 31, 2017 by Staff News Writer

The demonstration by employees of the Costa Rican Social Security Fund (CCSS) against the reform of the pension system, caused serious damages in hospitals.

Unions went into the streets, again, against increase in IVM contribution.

According to data from the National Union of Employees of the Caja (UNDECA), 80% of services in the San Carlos hospital was paralyzed.

In Mexico Hospital, 16 of 17 surgeries that had been programmed were canceled and between 70 and 80% of the External Consultation was paralyzed.

In this medical center, only the Oncology, Radiotherapy, Gynecology, Endocrinology and Cardiology services operated normally.

More than 200 employees from the Calderón Guardia Hospital were on strike and almost all services were operating normally. The services of Pharmacy and Laboratory are only taking care of special cases.

Unions oppose a 1% increase in the worker’s contribution to the proposed Disability, Old Age and Death (IVM) pension scheme discussed by the CCSS board.
