Neighbors report pollution and dead fish in a ravine

Residents of the Puerto Escondido community, in Pital de San Carlos, reported to the Ministry of Environment and Energy (MINAE), the pollution on San Pedro’s Ravine.

José Arce, a resident of the area, explained that they had to deal with the bad smell of dozens of dead fish since last week.

We demand that the authorities do something about it, we cannot live in peace with that smell day and night,”

said Arce.

Lissy Calderón, who lives in front of the ravine, said that this is a pine forest area that has many problems.

There is a sector where there are three packaging plants for agricultural products (…) A few days ago my son and some neighbors walked up and down the ravine and from those three plants down the water is cloudy. Now there is no life in the stream, all the fish were asphyxiated,”

said the woman.

The neighbors also requested the Public Force to go observe this, which was necessary to be able to file the complaint in the MINAE.

On Monday, Calderón and other neighbors went to the offices of the National System of Conservation Areas (SINAC) to lodge a new complaint, because according to her, they have not paid attention to them.

Nancy Quesada, coordinator of the San Juan Hydrological Unit, commented that the complaint was received and now they will have to assign the case to an official, but that it will depend on the workload.
