Part of the asphalt layer of a track at Daniel Oduber International Airport in Liberia collapsed due to the strength of an aircraft’s engines.

The asphalt was placed on the dawn of March 21st. Hours later, a plane took off and ripped off the newly placed material.

Enio Cubillo, director of Civil Aviation, said that the damage occurred in an area that is not touched by the aircraft when taking off or landing.

When asked about the measures that could have been taken to avoid such incident, Cubillo said that they could not close the airport.

At the moment I don’t have the competences to answer questions that are for engineers and companies that use asphaltic material (…) We are obliged to issue a statement to the airlines and it is the choice to operate or not”

added Cubillo.
