Members of the ruling Sandinista Front party, on Tuesday approved the final vote on constitutional reforms that would allow President Daniel Ortega to run for re-election indefinitely. The reforms, which were approved in a first vote in December 2013, were endorsed with 64 votes in favor, 25 against with no abstentions, at a session of the unicameral National Assembly. The amendment also changed the way runoff elections are held, and allowed officers in the military to hold public office without renouncing military life. Ortega won reelection in 2011 after the Supreme Court declared unconstitutional a prohibition of consecutive presidential terms.
