Nicaragua suspends dialogue and experiences a new wave of protests

Nicaragua was experiencing uncertainty on Thursday after the suspension of a national dialogue in search of solutions to the political crisis in the country, while students and residents returned to the streets to demand justice and democratization.

The talks between the government and the opposition came to an impasse on Wednesday, after the mediation of the Catholic bishops failed to bring the positions closer to advance the discussion, centered on the proposal to anticipate the elections to shorten the mandate of President Daniel Ortega.

The government, on the other hand, demands the opposition to clear roads blocked by peasants and protesters in various parts of the country.

After the suspension of the dialogue there were attacks by groups related to Ortega in the cities of León, Chinandega (west), Juigalpa (center) and Nueva Segovia (north).

Hundreds of students and residents took the streets to march on the busy road to Masaya (south) waving flags and calling for the resignation of Ortega and his wife and vice president, Rosario Murillo. Mobilizations were also announced in other cities.

We are demonstrating peacefully and we condemn the attacks in Chinandega and León. We are tired of the double standards of the government,”

claimed Edwin Carcache, leader of the student movement April 19th.

The chancellor Denis Moncada assured after the suspension of the dialogue that the government has a good will, but reiterated that the agenda proposed by the hierarchy is a camouflaged way to overthrow Ortega making it look like a legal process.
