The Ombudsman’s Office said that under no circumstances can government institutions provide a list of the names of Nicaraguans who have sought refuge in the country.
The statement by the Ombudsman’s Office comes after a public act held by Daniel Ortega, president of Nicaragua, who said he would ask for the list of people who are seeking refuge in Costa Rica under the pretext that they are fleeing justice in that country.
Costa Rica, as a democracy based on values such as respect for Human Rights, must show respect for international conventions that protect refugees, international organizations that watch over their respect, but above all, people who trust our country as a place where they are treated with respect and their rights are protected,”
said Juan Manuel Cordero, deputy ombudsman.
The institution also stated that the principle of confidentiality and the obligation to provide international protection to people seeking refuge must be guaranteed; otherwise, it would constitute a serious injury to human rights.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs assured they will not provide this type of data because it is sensitive information.
