This Thursday, Ortega called for a “negotiation” with the opposition that requests his resignation to solve the extensive political crisis unleashed by protests that have left more than 320 dead.
The president said that the government is making efforts to set the table for negotiation next Wednesday 27th with representatives determined by the opposition.
Ortega said that the talks will be to
open a new route (of understanding) because we can no longer talk about returning to the previous situation (to the protests). That bridge is burned; they burned it with all that terror starting in April.”
The talks will be held
no longer with this crowd (who participated in the failed dialogue), nor with the media, that is not correct in any negotiation,”
warned Ortega.
The Civic Alliance, which brings together entrepreneurs, students and civil society organizations, in a parallel, appointed its negotiation team composed of six full members with their alternates and an equal number of advisers.
The announcement of the talks was made by Ortega, during an act of commemoration for the 85th anniversary of the death of the nationalist leader Augusto Sandino, before members of the cabinet, the army, the police and followers.
The call for talks comes at a time when the government is facing an acute financial crisis with a deficit of 315 million dollars, without funding sources that were usually covered with donations and loans from multilateral organizations.
The government interrupted the dialogue in June and undertook a combined action by the police and paramilitaries to lift the barricades (roadblocks) placed by protesters on the tracks in the context of the protests which it calls an attempted coup.
