OVSICORI seismographs recorded New Zealand earthquake

Seismic stations from the Volcanological and Seismological Observatory of Costa Rica (OVSICORI) caught the earthquake in New Zealand on Sunday.

The movement of 7.8 degrees caused a 2-meter tsunami in the South Island of that country. Despite the intensity of the earthquake, no injuries were reported.

The earthquake occurred near midnight on Sunday at a dept of 23 kilometers, according to the United States Geological Survey, which records seismic activity worldwide.

reported OVSICORI on Sunday.

According to a cable from the AFP agency, emergency services are assessing the damage of the earthquake, which could have affected some houses in the town of Cheviot, near the epicenter.

These situations are not new. In February 2011, some 185 people died as a result of an earthquake of 6.3 degrees that hit the city of Christchurch in the South Island, with more than 30,000 buildings.

New Zealand, similar to Costa Rica, sits on a fault between tectonic plates.
