The Citizen Action Party (PAC) will keep pushing the idea that the best thing for society is that each person can register one weapon and not three as approved on Monday through a motion to bill 20,509.
They’ll present revision motions in the Security and Drug Trafficking Commission in order to return the original proposal put forward by the Executive Power.
Currently, the law establishes the possession of three weapons, but the Executive, through the Ministry of Public Security, insists on reducing that number to only one, arguing that it will help in the reduction of violence.
According to legislator Enrique Sánchez, in 2018, they achieved the support of eight congressmen out of nine.
Data revealed at the conference showed that as of December 2018, 280,163 weapons were registered, which corresponds to 5% of the population. Sánchez insisted that there is a direct relationship between this figure and increased homicides as well as criminality.
The PAC will also seek to tighten controls, particularly with security companies, since the whereabouts of 5,200 weapons belonging to companies that were dissolved or did not obtain renewal permits are unknown.
