The Panamanian Prosecutor’s Office is investigating 14 companies in the country for the embezzlement of $300 million from the monthly payments to the social security agency in 2015.
The anti-corruption prosecutor, Marina García, said that the investigation was opened on April 13th to prove if the 14 companies that are being targeted have diverted funds from the employer’s contribution.
The prosecutor clarified that so far it has not been possible to verify that there has been collaboration of officials in this scandal.
The president of the Board of the Social Security Fund, Guillermo Puga, said in an interview to channel TVN-2 that it’s a lot of money, and that the scandal is alarming because they really had no idea.
It seems that there is no control or security so that nobody can abuse the system,”
added Puga.
