A bill intends to lower the price of gas by removing its single tax and by opening the market for the import and marketing of the product.
The initiative, which is processed under file 20,077, was presented by legislators from Partido Libertario.
According to the political party, the gas price for final consumers includes a single tax representing approximately 50% of additional cost.
For this reason, legislators believe that this tax is highly regressive and directly affects consumers who prefer cooking fuel and save on electricity payment.
They made the project after a proposal that would raise the price of gas by 72%.
Otto Guevara, member of Partido Libertario, recalled that the Costa Rican Oil Refinery (RECOPE) hasn’t refined oil or liquefied gas since 2011.
According to 2011 census, in Costa Rica, approximately 451,000 households use gas for cooking. Many of these families live in poverty conditions.
