Passenger traffic at the Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport, in Liberia de Guanacaste, grew 7.26% according to a comparison made between January and October 2018 with the same period in 2019.
According to data from Coriport SA, a concession company of the air terminal, in the first 10 months of the year, 1,206,901 passengers were served. In March, the passenger record was broken with 166,240 people served and in the low season months there was a steady increase in user traffic.
The good news is largely due to the fact that during 2019 the airport has received two new routes (Vancouver – Liberia and Amsterdam – Liberia), as well as the increase in frequencies between major cities such as Boston and New York, which have helped this growth. There was also the arrival of the renowned airline KLM, which will connect Guanacaste with Amsterdam directly,”
said Coriport, in a press release issued on Wednesday.
This year the air terminal was recognized by the International Airports Council as the best in Latin America and the Caribbean in the category of less than two million passengers per year.
We are very happy to show these positive figures. Coordination of efforts with government institutions and airlines has been essential to have doubled passenger traffic in recent years and also have growth options for the future. A large number of service expansion initiatives are maintained from various points of the world which allows us to be optimistic,”
said César Jaramillo, general manager of Coriport.
In August, the Executive Power announced a series of works for this international airport (the second most important for the country):
-Improvement of the ring surface on the runway and platform, horizontal demarcation (painting), improvements of security strips and perimeter streets. Investment ₡ 883 million.
-A study for the improvement of the runway was concluded and the Environmental Impact study is being carried out. Investment: ₡ 550 million.
-The expansion of the air side of the airport, the perimeter enclosure, roads, access and other works are projected. Investment: ₡ 57,124 million.
-The construction of a platform for general aviation parking will be carried out. Investment ₡ 1,225 million.
In addition, the JetBlue airline chose Liberia as the first MINT (executive class flight) destination outside the United States to fly from New York. And, as a result, another MINT was opened to Boston that will begin operations in December.
