Peace deal in Colombia could negatively affect the region

The whole world celebrates the peace deal signed by Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC).

However, this could cause a significant arms trafficking, cocaine and even illicit capital increase in Central America. Costa Rica is not exception and it would be harmed.

The outlook for the country and the region in security issues is not positive. The agreement will affect us in a negative sense, perhaps Colombians will be benefited, but we will not because there will be an increase of drugs, weapons and money from drug trafficking,

declared analyst on security issues Paul Chaves.

According to Chaves, in recent weeks, cocaine production has greatly increased in Colombia. This is a consequence of the deal: since guerrilla members have to give up their labs, they are producing drugs on a large scale.

Minister of Security Gustavo Mata declared that 2,000 tons of drugs are likely to be distributed in the region.

There is not information regarding guns, but it is known that the FARC has more than 15,000 supporters, so it must have a great quantity of guns hidden.

According to analysts, 30% of FARC members don’t agree with the deal and more criminal groups are likely to be created.

Chaves said that the reality of the country’s security seems to have a dark future because of the Ministry of Security’s budget deficit, the controversial prison policy debate and the number of migrants who become a vulnerable population to commit criminal acts due to the hard situation they are living in Costa Rica.
