Peña Nieto: “Mexico and The United States are building a new relationship”

Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto said that his country is building “a new relationship” with the United States and thanked its Latin American partners for their solidarity.

The president did not offer any details about that relationship, although his country has been the target of criticism of new US president Donald Trump, who has proposed to renegotiate the free trade agreement and build a wall along the border to curb the entry of migrants.

San José Summit gathers leaders or representatives from Mexico, Colombia, the Dominican Republic and Central America.

Peña Nieto said, and assured that countries attending the summit will be informed about the situation as long as it affects them.

Tuxtla Gutiérrez mechanism aims to review and promote a regional development agenda that includes actions in transportation, energy, environment and health. In addition, concerns about the policies of the new US government have been included in the dialogues.

President Luis Guillermo Solís stressed that the region has new challenges regarding human rights, organized crime and climate change to face migratory flows.
