On Monday afternoon, President Luis Guillermo Solís and Chancellor Manuel González signed the Treaty of Marrakech, which will allow visually impaired people to have access to literary material.
Costa Rica is the 13th country to sign the treaty, which encourages books, newspapers, magazines, and other similar texts to be produced in formats fit for the blind.
This treaty represents an urgent advance in human rights and access to information, education, culture and all the opportunities that this brings,”
said the president.
The Marrakesh Treaty promotes the enactment of exceptions in national copyright laws for the visually impaired. In addition, it eliminates customs and tariff barriers, which allows the delivery of works in that format.
Today, a three-day workshop began in the country to promote effective implementation of the treaty, as well as to encourage the production of materials for all these people. People from various Latin American countries will participate in the workshop.
As a State, it is up to us to assume the responsibility of giving all people opportunities to develop in their capacity and talents,”
said Vice President Ana Helena Chacón.
