Plan would force the public sector to employ Afro-descendants

Legislator Maureen Clarke, head of the National Liberation Party (PLN), is promoting a bill that seeks public institutions to hire at least 7% of Afro-descendant people.

The lawmaker explained that all public entities would be asked for that a minimum quota in order to implement the constitutional reform approved last year, which states that Costa Rica is a multicultural and multiethnic country.

This is an affirmative action in employment, education and in the cultural field framed in the public policy with concrete results.

The initiative was affirmatively approved by the Human Rights Commission of the Legislative Assembly.
