Poás and Turrialba volcanoes remain active

The National University’s Volcanological and Seismological Observatory (OVSICORI-UNA) reports significant low-amplitude tremor activity in the Poás and Turrialba volcanoes during the last 24 hours.

According to their report, Poás Volcano shows low amplitude tremors with a series of low-amplitude LP-volcano-tectonic earthquakes.

It also reports strong continuous degassing with a column of water vapor, magma gases and aerosols.

During Wednesday night smell of sulfur was reported in Alajuela, San Ramón and Barva. There was incandescence in the area of the crater, and in the column of vapor.

So far, there have been no hydrothermal explosions. The winds at the top of the volcano are variable and are directed mainly towards the south.

In the case of Turrialba, there has been a strong continuous degassing with a column of water vapor, at about 500 meters high from the bottom of the active crater.

There is no ash fall and the winds are directed mainly to the west.
