Poas volcano in Alajuela recorded an impressive new eruption on Tuesday afternoon.
According to Enrique Hernández, a specialist of the National Volcanology and Seismological Observatory (OVSICORI), this is the type of phreatic eruption they have seen since early May.
“The lake is the balance between water and gases when they receive pressure and heat from a source. When it’s overheated, that balance is lost and we see that type of eruption. This one was very explosive,” explained Hernández.
OVSICORI began to count Poas’ eruptions in June 5th, resulting in 4 to 6 daily eruptions, with variations in their columns ranging from 20 to 100 meters high.
