The Costa Rican police would begin to apply the polygraph test for identifying officers that might be involved in criminal activities.
The proposal to use the polygraph to control its police officers it has been under consideration for many years. However, it emerged again this week when nine policemen were arrested for allegedly belonging to gang dedicated to house burglaries.
Costa Rican police is being advised by a team of experts from the National Police of Colombia, they are expected to arrive in the country in the upcoming weeks. Last year, the Colombian institution sent 4,500 of its officers to the polygraph.
Juan José Andradre, director of the Costa Rican police force, said that before using the polygraph on staff is necessary to create a legal framework, because current laws don’t foresee using this device to check in on employees integrity.
Costa Rican police have opened administrative proceedings to more than 400 police officers out of 12,500 troops.
