Presidency backs 1.5% tax on Netflix and cable companies

November 6, 2019 by Staff News Writer

The Presidential House will support the bill that stipulates that platforms that broadcast series and movies (such as Netflix) and cable companies pay a 1.5% tax to finance Costa Rican film productions.

On Tuesday, the Minister of the Presidency, Víctor Morales Mora, supported this tribute that was endorsed last Thursday by the Science and Technology Commission of the Legislative Assembly by positively ruling on file 20.66, Bill for Cinematography and Audiovisual.

If the plan is approved, those who hire services of cable television operators and Netflix, HBO Go, AppleTV, Amazon Prime VIDEO, Fox Premium, among others, must pay an additional amount in their monthly bill for these services.

For example, the basic Netflix rate that is currently $ 8.99 (¢ 5,240) with the tax would cost ¢ 5,320.

The text also proposes a redistribution of resources for the public entertainment tax. If the plan is approved, 20% would go to the Cinema Center, 40% would go to the National Theater, 22% to the National Theater Company, 9% to the Costa Rican Museum of Art and another 9% to the National Institute of Music.
