President Carlos Alvarado denied having received pressure from the country’s industrial sector to make the decision to withdraw two bills liked to the use of plastic from the Congress’ agenda of extraordinary sessions.
After statements by the Christian Socialist Erwen Masís on these alleged pressures, Alvarado said the decision to remove the projects from the agenda of the Legislative Assembly was made to improve both texts after concerns expressed by the private sector about employment.
Alvarado said he talked with Masís not to express the alleged pressure, but as a courtesy for being one of the proponents of one of the projects. He added that he supports reforms to regulate the commercial use of this material.
According to Masís, on Tuesday night the president informed him that he had dismissed the two bills related to plastic under pressure from the industrial sector.
The projects that have been canceled are 20,985 “Law to Fight Pollution by Plastic and Protect the Environment”, presented by Masís, as well as 21,159 “Law to Solve the Pollution of Solid Waste,” by Paola Vega.
