Carlos Alvarado gave up on the idea of giving his first speech before the Organization of the United Nations (UN) in New York next Tuesday.
The president announced on Wednesday the cancellation of his trip due to the tense social climate that is experienced in the country over the strike of public employees against the tax plan.
The situation of our nation requires my presence in Costa Rica,”
said Alvarado through his official Twitter account.
He added that the representation of the country in the 73rd assembly of the UN will be vice president and chancellor Epsy Campbell.
This week, CRHoy was the first media that announced that Alvarado’s participation in the next UN assembly was in danger, when he canceled a tour to California in search of investments. The president planned to travel to Silicon Valley with Commerce hierarch, Dyala Jiménez.
CRHOY learned that the Costa Rican mission to the UN had made Alvarado the eighth president to deliver his speech on the first day of the session and in the group in which presidents of world powers such as the United States, France, Mexico, and Brazil are presiding. Now, with the participation of Campbell, Costa Rica’s turn will be among the last, because Heads of State have priority.
