President of PAC: “The rights of women are not postponable”

Neither the President of the Republic, Carlos Alvarado, nor the Ministry of Health believe it is a priority to sign the regulation for therapeutic abortion, a legal practice that women cannot follow because of the lack of clear guidelines.

But the new president of the Citizen Action Party (PAC), Marta Solano, thinks otherwise, although she preferred not to criticize the position of the president on this issue, and said that women’s rights are not postponable.

In general, human rights are not prioritized, especially when it comes to women,”

added Solano.

Signing these parameters would allow to regulate the therapeutic abortion, a procedure allowed in article 121 of the Penal Code, when the health of the mother is in danger and when it is practiced by a doctor or by an authorized obstetrician.

However, in practice women cannot have this intervention because of the refusal of doctors, who adhere to legal or moral reasons to oppose.

While it is true that this was one of Alvarado’s campaign promises, during the last weeks he has expressed that this is not a priority issue for the country, as opposed to the fiscal issue, insecurity, or unemployment.
