President of the Spanish government will visit Costa Rica

The president of the Spanish government, Pedro Sánchez, will visit the country next week, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. President Carlos Alvarado and vice president and chancellor Epsy Campbell will receive Sánchez on Thursday at the Ministry’s headquarters.

The Executive Branch explained that the work agenda will focus on the search for cooperation plans on environmental issues, especially in aspects related to the decarbonization of the economy. The empowerment of women in economic and political fields will also be on the table.

The Foreign Ministry said that the space will serve to generate alliances with Spain on issues that Costa Rica promotes in the international community such as disarmament, the promotion of peace, and the defense of human rights.

President Pedro Sánchez is a 46-year-old economist who came to power on June 1st, after Mariano Rajoy was forced to step out of power. Sánchez is also General Secretary of the Spanish Socialist Workers Party (PSOE).

Costa Rica does not receive a president from Spain since 2004, when José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero visited.
