On Monday, the President of the Republic ordered that no representative of the Executive Power goes to Bogotá, Colombia, to the Lima Group meeting to discuss the political and humanitarian crisis in Venezuela.
Although Costa Rica is part of the Lima Group and most of the presidents and chancellors who make up this forum were there, according to Foreign Affairs Minister Manuel Ventura, it was Alvarado who made the decision that Costa Rica was not going to be there.
Only Costa Rica’s business manager in Colombia, Alexis Coto, was representing the country. The decision was strongly criticized by the opposition and various political sectors.
According to Ventura it was Alvarado who gave the order not to sign the Lima Group’s declaration after its meeting in Bogotá.
The president in charge of Venezuela, Juan Guaidó, and the US vice president, Mike Pence, were present at that meeting.
The Lima Group is made up of Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Guyana, Honduras, Panama, Paraguay, Peru and Saint Lucia. The United States and the European Union are observers.
