President says dialogue with unions was positive

President Carlos Alvarado assured that the meetings held with the different trade union groups on the subject of the fiscal reform have been very positive. However, he emphasized that this is a process.

We are in a process of dialogue and I see a positive process because that dialogue has been sustained and we have a guarantor person, Father Edwin Aguiluz on the part of the Catholic Church. Now there is also a union document on the table,”

said the president.

Alvarado added that both Vice President Marvin Rodríguez and Minister of Labor Steven Núñez, as delegates of the Government, have said that the proposals are advancing correctly. They are focusing on the elements that unite them; however, there are some aspects that still need to be assessed.

On July 9th, the trade union movement gave the government representatives a fiscal proposal that, according to them, would allow the collection of financial resources without imposing more taxes on the Costa Rican people. However, they believe the Executive wants to pass the project at all costs without listening to alternative measures.

The points proposed by the unions are:

1-Tax on big utilities
2-Effective execution of customs valuation.
3-Implementation of container scanning for inspection.
4- Tax on international financial transactions.
5-Tax on the financial profits of the usurer collection of credit cards and others.
6-Solidarity contribution of the exemption system for free zones.
