President supports Finance Minister and National Treasurer

President Carlos Alvarado is backing the finance minister, Rocío Aguilar, amid criticism from different political sectors in Congress that hold her responsible for approving debt payments without budgetary content, in the midst of the missing liquidity faced by the government of Alvarado for the fiscal gap of ¢900 billion left by the administration of Luis Guillermo Solís.

This was stated on Wednesday morning by the Minister of Communication, Nancy Marín, who also said that the president agrees with the current national treasurer, Marta Cubillo, whom the legislators recommend to ban from holding public office for at least four years for not activating alerts in the face of liquidity problems while serving as vice minister of Treasury in the previous administration.

The support of the President to both officials comes after the report by the legislators of the Commission of Income and Public Expenditure that investigated the fiscal gap left by the government of Solís, which was hidden by the former president and his then vice president and finance minister, Helio Fallas, in the middle of last year’s election campaign.

Most of the Commission of Income and Public Expenditure scolded the President for being permissive with the current authorities of the Treasury and allowing minister Rocio Aguilar to make payments of debt securities without budgetary content.

The report also blames Hacienda officials Melvin Quirós, Marjorie Morera and Julio Espinoza.
