Costa Ricans would have to pay yet another tax increase: the municipal tax on immovable property, which could go up if a bill is approved to provide resources to municipalities and thus strengthen the municipal police.
This proposal will be presented by 18 mayors and the Ministry of Security to the Legislative Assembly in the coming weeks.
The proposal sets a very reasonable increase to the property tax, so municipalities may increase the minimum or maximum or intermediate amount as a financing mechanism,”
said San José Mayor, Johnny Araya.
The mayor explained that this tax is linked to the value of the property. He also noted that the percentage of traffic fines that are destined for this unit would move from 40% to 70% to finance Municipal Police.
According to the advocates of this proposal, the project is not binding and it’s up to each municipality to decide whether to follow it or not.
