Attorney general, Jorge Chavarria claims public officials from San Carlos have ties to drug trafficking.
Chavarria made this statement during a visit to San Carlos, where he acknowledged that drug traffickers and money launderers have great influence in the province.
According to Chavarria, a group of businessmen have been collaborating with drug traffickers. So he said that it will be necessary for law enforcement efforts to combat organized crime and corruption.
Criminal groups in San Carlos control drug trafficking routes from South America to Central America, which are used to ship drugs to the United States and Europe. In October 2015, an organization dedicated to sending cocaine to Italy was dismantled. The group was linked with the Italian mafia ‘Ndrangheta.
