Protesters burn part of justice building in Caracas

On Monday hooded protesters set fire to an administrative building of the Supreme Court of Justice (TSJ) during violent riots in Caracas, after a new day of protests against Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro.

The groups of protesters threw stones and Molotov cocktails against the building of the Executive Direction of the Judiciary in Chacao, unleashing the flames on the façade.

A huge column of black smoke was hovering over the building late in the afternoon following the operation of the fire department, while military and police threw tear gas to disperse the demonstrators.

The building, which operates an auxiliary body of the Supreme Court with functions of direction, administration and inspection of the Judiciary, had been a frequent target of demonstrators since the outbreak of protests against Maduro, which have resulted in 66 dead victims.

The TSJ announced that it will change that institution by order of its president, Judge Maikel Moreno, since Chacao is “a territory without law”.
