Recent eruptions in Poás are harmless

Poás volcano surprised Costa Ricans in recent days with constant eruptions seen from different points near the crater.

Luckily for scientists and visitors, a report published by the Volcanological and Seismological Observatory of Costa Rica (OVSICORI) determined that there is no recent evidence of ballistic blocks or magma bombs emanating from the volcano.

Poás had a peak of activity in early 2017 after a series of violent eruptions that caused the temporary closure of the national park – one of the most visited in the country- for almost a year and a half.

Eliécer Duarte, a volcanologist from OVSICORI visited and inspected the volcano on January 8th. According to his assessment, recent eruptions are geyser-type, characterized by the abundant output of magmatic gases and water vapor.

These events, prior to the April 2017 eruptions, have been common for many decades. The absence of ballistic blocks, bombs or pyroclastics emphasize that there is no recent magmatic activity.
