This week, twenty-five journalists from Latin America and the United States analyze Costa Rica’s achievements and challenges on environmental issues, during a training session organized in the country for the following three days.
From Monday to Wednesday, the group of communicators has received a firsthand-knowledge of the details related to climate change in the country.
Issues such as the energy matrix, the use of transport fuels, sustainable ecotourism initiatives and forest coverage have been just a few of the agenda.
They have been able to talk with some of the most important environmental authorities in Costa Rica, including Edgar Gutiérrez, Minister of Environment and Energy, Manuel Obregón, president of the Costa Rican Electricity Institute (ICE), Irene Cañas, Deputy Minister of Environment and Mónica Araya, president of the Costa Rica Limpia organization, among others.
Costa Rica is recognized for everything it has done on different issues, it always looks like a kind of laboratory, so that’s why the idea was to bring them in so they also know what is being done regarding the zero-carbon goal and the issues it faces,”
said Kathiana Murillo, coordinator of LatinClima, one of the organizations in charge of the activity.
As part of their visit to the country, the communicators traveled to the Monteverde Forest Reserve and their tour ends at the Arenal project.
For the organizations involved it is very important to work with journalists to reach the general public,”
added Murillo.
The activity is organized by the Earth Journalism Networking Foundation, The Stanley Foundation and LatinClima.
