Regulations for death pensions for gay couples will ready in September

According to the Pension Management from the Costa Rican Social Security Fund (CCSS), the rules for same-sex couples to benefit from the death pension will be ready next month.

The proposal must be approved by the board of the institution.

It is estimated that the extension of the benefit of pension for death to same-sex couples will imply expenses of 300 million colones a year for the institution. The amount was calculated with the expectation that each year between 50 and 60 couples could benefit from this.

The cost is not extremely high for the institution, considering the CCSS disburses about 56 billion colones a month for the payment of death benefits.

Jaime Barrantes, pension manager from the CCSS, said that the rules for the benefit will not be very different from the current ones, and insisted that the CCSS decided to approve the amendment because of its respect for human rights, as it did in 2014 when it approved the extension of health insurance for these couples.
